Nkiru : Continuing The Legacy - On-Line.
BROOKLYN, NY, November, 2001 – The Nkiru Center for Education and Culture announces the unveiling of its new website www.nkirucenter.org.
The development of the site comes during a time of considerable financial turmoil for the 24 year old center. The store was recently forced to move from its original location in Park Slope Brooklyn due to increasing rent and rising overhead costs.
The original Nkiru Books founded by educator Leothy Miller-Owens was established in 1976. Miller’s vision was then continued by her mother Adelaide Miller who later sold the store to Talib Kweli and Dante Smith (Mos Def), of the popular Hip-hop duo Black Star. Community members later restructured Nkiru into a not for profit educational and cultural center. Since then the community has enacted an aggressive campaign to keep the center open. "We ask for your donations, your support in the form of fundraisers and your purchasing power. Your donations are tax deductible.” Says Brenda Greene Director & Board Chairman of the center.
The design of the site itself is a donation to the center by Capital Mindz, Inc. a local technology support company. “We feel that the tradition that Nkiru represents symbolizes the best within our community and we wanted to help provide the center with the web presence it deserves.” The website offers news and events as well as free email to all its patrons.
The Nkiru Center for Education and Culture is a not for profit organization dedicated to promoting literacy and multicultural awareness for people of color. It accomplishes this through author signings and discussions, readings, panel discussions, a book club, poetry forums, story hours, writing seminars, and the selling of multicultural literature.
For information concerning the Nkiru Center contact the store at 718-783-6306, or e-mail the store at nkirucenter@nkirucenter.org. Nkiru is located on 732 Washington Ave between Park and Prospect Place in Brooklyn, N.Y. 11217.
